Virtual Travel Events: January 2021

The UK is back in lockdown and I wanted to share some of the virtual travel events taking place around the world this month.

Even if we can’t travel right now, these virtual events are a good insight into what is out there! I have included some free and paid for events.

All of these events are based on UK Time.

Tales from the Tower of London

  • Wednesday January 13th at 11am

Run by Footprints of London this virtual Tour is delivered by Zoom, where guide Rob will tell you some of the tales from the Tower of London. Learn about famous prisoners like Anne Boleyn to less well known ones like Ludovico Hurwitz-y-Zender a German spy shot in the Tower in World War One.

You’ll hear about the animals that made the Tower home from the unfortunate elephant to the famous raven’s.  The virtual tour features pictures from the Tower of London, including close up’s of prisoners graffiti and the armour of King Henry VIII.

There will be an opportunity to ask Rob questions at the end of the tour.

Israel, A Culinary Tour

  • Tuesday January 19th at 7pm

Brought to you by National Geographic Traveller, a panel of “travel geeks”  will discuss Israel’s vibrant and exciting food scene.

The panel of guests will discuss where to try the best street food, discovering how the country has become one of the world’s top vegetarian and vegan destinations and explore the vast and versatile array of fresh ingredients produced around Israel.

They will explore the colours, flavours, sights and smells of Israel’s culinary scene, city by city, uncovering top tips, inspiring itineraries and getting you in the mood for travel once more.

Virtual Tour of South West Iceland

  • Wednesday 3rd of March at 10pm

Organised by Virtual Online this 1 hour, 30 minute tour will take you to all the wonders the bottom left corner of Iceland has to offer, from the Capital Region of Reykjavik, via the Golden Circle and round to the Blue Lagoon at the very end of the Island. Tour Director Dustin Yuill will take you to the land of the midnight sun.

On the way we’ll take in glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, shifting tectonic plates, black sand beaches, and a whole lot more.

An Evening With Michael Palin

  • Monday 18th January at 7:30pm

This online zoom event is in collaboration with Royal Scottish Geographical Society

Michael is a proud supporter of all things geographical, and throughout his childhood dreamed of travel and adventure – a dream which was realised through eight TV series and books to accompany, including Around the World in 80 Days, Pole to Pole, Sahara and Himalaya.

Recently, Michael also presented a two-part series on North Korea, with an accompanying journal published in 2019. For this online event, he will focus on his work in North Korea, shedding light on one of the most intriguing and secretive countries in the world. There will be chance to ask questions of Michael in the live Q&A that follows his presentation.

A Virtual Tour: Capitals of Scandinavia

  • Wednesday 3rd of February 2:25pm

This virtual event is organised by Norway Live Online and is a 3 tour tour of Scandinavia: Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm.
We will admire Norwegian Viking ships, understand the Danish concept of hygge, discover the wonderful venue where the Noble prizes are awarded every year in Stockholm and much more.

Walking Along the Seine

  • Saturday 16th January at 3:30pm

Get ready to travel to Paris with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. Yet you’ll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and amazing guide.

The tour will last about 30 mins and will be live-streamed by your guide directly – forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen! While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your guide and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat.

Listen and learn about how important the river Seine is, not only did it serve as a vital source of water, it acted as the main means of transportation to effect trade with other cities and it offered a natural layer of protection against warring factions.

Luckily we’ll be able to pass all of the riverside sites as we explore what the river means to Parisians as we join them to stroll along the river.

Virtual Tour of Buckingham Palace

  • Saturday January 16th at 12am

If you’re staying up late on Saturday why not tune in an watch Things to Do in DC’s guide will take you on a virtual experience of the history and tour of Buckingham Palace. 

Begin with a historical perspective on the creation of the palace and its place in the world since the 18th Century.  You will then “go inside” and learn about the rooms and artwork located within its royal walls including the State Rooms (used for receiving guests and functions), the amazing grand staircase, the throne room, and many more. 

Explore the history, architecture, and treasures of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the summer residence of the Royal Family up in Scotland. Highlights will include a day in the life of running the palace, and recall interviews from some of the staff, and also how they recovered from the tragic fire that ravaged St. George’s Hall in 1992.
